What I wouldn't give to turn that into my own private compound :-)

http://www.loopnet.com/Listing/19106324/5315-25-Cabbane-Saint-Louis-MO/susiehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02645391463276243640noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7190846390008853053.post-49189535557163887782013-01-01T08:43:01.086-06:002013-01-01T08:43:01.086-06:00I rode my bike into the garage under those apartme...I rode my bike into the garage under those apartment turrets you picture back in 1951-2. There was no garage door then. It seemed like a fun thing to do to an 8 year old at the time. Each front door in the picture also had its own stairway up from the garage to the apartments.

My first grade teacher lived at the Winston Churchill even after she retired from teaching around 1960 and stayed there until she passed away many years later, the only white woman left in the building. There was a coffee shop/tea room on the first floor at the corner on Belt. The Hodiamont Streetcar ran behind the building.

Many of the sidewalks on the east west streets west of belt were slabs of slate, not concrete, that by the early 50's had been moved by tree roots into a crazy quilt of angles and bumps that made a bicycle ride rather bumpy, if not somewhat treacherous.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06437987628882971576noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7190846390008853053.post-16858588573148358372010-01-24T00:04:09.712-06:002010-01-24T00:04:09.712-06:00^ anon 8:14 pm, no this is not visible from I-70. ...^ anon 8:14 pm, no this is not visible from I-70. Is that the one you see from I-70, the big hillside. When you get to the top there are some wonderful building, occupied, but under maintained.

N StL to me has a very charming feeling. Lots of intersecting streets on the diagonal. It gives a very village kind of feel distinct from the sometimes monotonous grid that is S StLAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7190846390008853053.post-69364376069552856432010-01-05T20:10:38.321-06:002010-01-05T20:10:38.321-06:00I have wandered into this neighborhood never knowi...I have wandered into this neighborhood never knowing what is was. Now I am going to do a little guess work and say it was the former home of Visitation Academy which relocated to Ballas and Hwy 40. Also note the hospital complex on Delmar was the former home of St Lukes before they went to Hwy 141. Any can feel free to correct me on these points.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7190846390008853053.post-15017839699827717752009-12-30T11:22:59.249-06:002009-12-30T11:22:59.249-06:00^ yeah the city should take some of the blame, but...^ yeah the city should take some of the blame, but so should the residents.
