Painted advertisements: good or bad?

On Gravois right around Bates you will find some relatively new business adornments on some fine looking old buildings.

I am fascinated with ghost signs all over St. Louis.  And it's good to see newer ones.  I think they add character, but I have friends that can't stand painted bricks of any kind.

Here are 3 that are within a 1/4 mile of each other:
I'd like to hear from you on what you think of painted advertisements on brick buildings.

  1. Love 'em! They totally funkify the streetscape.

  2. yep, they're AWESOME. they say "this city has a healthy economy" and they add some color to the sometimes-monotony of the red brick (don't get me wrong i LOVE red brick but a little burst of color here and there never hurts). and it's just paint - it can be removed if somebody really really wants it removed.

  3. I like them. I think they are more intentional than a mass purchased billboard. And over time, they fade and that's how you get the history of tomorrow. Especially in the case of the Lemmons' sign, which promotes itself. When you make a commitment to allow your building to essentially be defaced, you probably think a lot harder about what goes there than when you allow someone to throw up a billboard.

  4. I like 'em too. Bob said it well when he described "the history of tomorrow." I'm fascinated, and pleased, that the two that promote beer opted for non A-B brews.

  5. I think they're wonderful. I lament that we don't have more!
